Airport committee backs review of proposal to lease old terminal for flight school

Dennis Smooty, chairman of the airport committee, reported to the Board of Aldermen that the committee met May 21 at the municipal (regional) airport and heard a proposal to lease the old terminal building.
Smooty said the committee heard from Evan Walden about a proposal to possibly lease the terminal, which previously housed a restaurant, for a new business that could include a flight school and other aviation-related activities. "The committee suggested sending this proposal to the city attorney for his review before moving forward," Smooty said.
Smooty also told the board the committee had recommended the city attorney review the proposal and flagged that some repairs would be needed by the city to get the building ready for any transition to a lessee.
The board did not take action on a lease at the June 1 meeting; Smooty reported the committee's recommendation will be a next step before any formal agreement or lease terms are negotiated.
