Normal, Ill. — Speakers at the June 1 meeting of the Normal Town Council highlighted the 40th anniversary of the town's arts grants program and praised the program's role in supporting local cultural organizations.
An attendee who said he helped establish the arts-grant program in 1986 described the grant pool and noted that $50,000 was available this year. He said the town funded 31 of 35 applicants (the town found a way to finance one additional applicant), with requests totaling about $128,000. He named many recipients, including the Bloomington Normal Community Concert Band, Bloomington Normal Youth Symphony, Crossroads Area Student Theater, Illinois State University (Foxtail Film Festival and Concerts on the Quad), Heartland Community College programs, McLean County Art Center events and the Penguin Project of McLean County.
Council members thanked grant recipients and congratulated winners during announcements. The council included congratulations in the meeting's routine business and approved consent items that covered minutes and a planning-services agreement.
The council encouraged residents to attend upcoming local performances and events supported in part by the grants, including a Penguin Project production and other seasonal performances.
