City presents first-quarter work-plan highlights: emergency notifications, wildfire grants and tree planting

At the June 1 workshop Aaron gave the council a first-quarter overview of the city’s strategic-plan progress across five goals and supporting initiatives.

On public safety he highlighted expanded multiagency coordination and said Grants Pass Fire & Rescue now has authority to issue emergency notifications in partnership with county and state agencies after an Everett Bridge emergency-alert training led by Chief Sanchez. Chief Sanchez described the defensible-space effort funded through a grant of about $296,000 that will target the wildland‑urban interface and provide residents with free, contractor-written prescriptions for clearing and property hardening; contractors must be licensed and the program will operate on a first‑come, first‑served basis through Dec. 30 unless extended.

Aaron also outlined economic-growth work, including a rapid-response industrial-lands group and a campaign that helped secure roughly $2,000,000 intended to address industrial land and wastewater deficiencies. He praised community events and volunteers—citing Art Along the Rogue and the Dollar Mountain trail system—and said the city will plant about 150 trees in public right-of-ways using a community-forestry grant.

On housing and homelessness staff noted ongoing coordination with partners (including Elk Island) on shelter and wraparound services and said they will provide an update at an upcoming business meeting.
