San Leandro receives CALED award for Bayfair redevelopment

San Leandro officials accepted a California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED) award Tuesday recognizing the city's Bayfair redevelopment project.
Katie Bowman, San Leandro's economic development manager, introduced CALED representatives on hand to present the award to the city and developer B3. Jennifer McClain Hiramoto, CALED state board chair, praised the city's rapid rezoning and partnership with the private developer that she said enabled conversion of roughly 400,000 square feet at the rear of Bayfair into flexible workspaces, training programs (Carrington College and San Joaquin Valley College), and senior day‑service space. CALED and East Bay EDA representatives said the redevelopment could create as many as 400 jobs at build‑out and that the developer is putting in more than $333 million of private investment to reposition the site.
Mayor Juan Gonzalez and council members thanked staff and the developer; CALED representatives emphasized the project as a replicable example of repositioning underused retail space.
The council moved the recognition higher on Tuesday's agenda to present it during the recognitions portion of the meeting.
