The Lakeville City Council voted unanimously to rename the Caspersen Park Outdoor Performance Stage the Doug and Deb Anderson Amphitheater.
The motion to approve the recommendation from the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resource Committee was made by Councilmember John Burmell and passed by roll call after a brief presentation from Parks & Recreation Director Joe Macey Archon. "The process for naming facilities does have a set policy on it," Macey Archon told the council, describing the committee review that considered legacy service and community connection.
Council members praised the Andersons’ long service to Lakeville. Councilmember Dan Walter said the Andersons helped secure the parks levy that enabled the facility and called the renaming a fitting tribute. Councilmember John Burmell noted the family’s long history of local involvement and support for community events at the site.
Macey Archon told the council the committee approved the request unanimously on May 20 and recommended the renaming because Mayor Anderson had helped oversee the project during his term and the Andersons frequently attend events at the park. Mayor Zalowski said the city expects to host a public celebration this summer to highlight the Andersons’ contributions.
The council took no other action on related naming policy changes; the approval applies only to the Caspersen Park performance stage.
