Calhoun County supervisors approve bridge project plans, boost HR director pay and hire custodian

Calhoun County supervisors met Aug. 5 at the Calhoun County Courthouse in Rockwell City and approved several administrative and infrastructure items, including funding and final plans for a bridge project and a partial pay increase for the county’s HR director.
The board — Chairman Dave George, Vice Chairman Cory Ridgely and Member Scott Jacobs — unanimously approved a funding agreement and final plans for the BROS‑CO13(105)--8J‑13 project after an update from Nick Buse, Calhoun/Sac County Engineer. The agenda record shows motions to approve the funding agreement and final plans passed with all supervisors voting aye.
Kristi Johnson, the county’s human resources director, told the board that an existing external HR contract with Renee VonBokern will not be renewed and asked that the $5,200 budgeted for that contract be added to her salary. The board approved moving $2,600 — half the budgeted contract amount — from the contracted HR line toward a pay increase for Johnson now, with the board to revisit the remaining amount this fall. The motion to transfer $2,600 passed unanimously.
Dewey Snyder, director of facilities, reported that furniture deliveries for Annex I began Aug. 4 and raised the possibility of moving his office from the Annex I upstairs to a main‑floor office; the board made no decision on the office move at this meeting. The board approved hiring Shelby Campbell as a part‑time custodian, effective Aug. 7, 2025.
The board held a teleconference at 10:05 a.m. with officials from Pocahontas County about joint drainage districts and a 2024 B & W spraying invoice. The supervisors approved payment of the B & W drainage invoice by motion; the vote was recorded as unanimous.
The supervisors also approved a correction to the final sentence of GASB 54 Resolution 2025‑12 (originally passed June 17, 2025). The corrected sentence now reads: “The above complies with the Calhoun County Financial Report for fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.”
No members of the public were present for public comment. The board adjourned and scheduled its next regular meeting for Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
