Neighborhood Council endorses request for River Drive South traffic study

Becky Rammell, owner of Golden Triangle Gym on River Drive South, asked Neighborhood Council #7 on May 11 to endorse a request to the Great Falls Street and Traffic Department for a traffic study on the stretch between the Mitchell Pool area and the point where River Drive curves east. Rammell said many new businesses on that stretch have made crossing the Drive hazardous "for both customers and staff," and she presented 15 letters from business owners and constituents supporting a lower speed limit and a dedicated crosswalk.
After discussion, the council voted to endorse the petition. The minutes do not record a mover or seconder for the motion; Council Member Sandy Rice was directed to draft a supporting letter for consideration at the June council meeting.
The endorsement asks the City Street and Traffic Department to evaluate vehicle speeds, pedestrian crossing safety and the feasibility of a marked crosswalk and speed-limit change along River Drive South. The council’s endorsement is a formal request to the traffic authority; any engineering study and any subsequent traffic-calming measures would be decided by the city department.
