Volunteer-run Ruta 27 seeks teachers to lead adult English classes after relocation amid immigration concerns
Summary
Ruta 27, a volunteer adult English program founded in 2014, is recruiting volunteer teachers for 12‑week classes offered at seven skill levels; organizers said classes moved from East Hampton High School because of fears about federal immigration enforcement and encouraged volunteers to sign up at ruta27.org.

Ruta 27, a volunteer-run program that has taught English to Spanish-speaking adults on the East End since 2014, is recruiting volunteers for its summer session and asking for a 12-week commitment.
"You just need to have enthusiasm and patience and be willing to commit for 12 weeks," said a program representative, describing the seven-level placement system that groups students by ability. Reporter Christine Sampson said younger learners under 18 are referred to the high school while adults 18 and older are welcomed into Ruta 27 classes.
Program representatives and students described a sharp demand for conversational and civics-focused instruction. "English is very important for us, and we are improving. We are not afraid to speak," said a student participant, describing the impact of the classes.
Organizers said the program was held for years at East Hampton High School but now meets elsewhere because of concerns about federal immigration actions. The move, they said, reflects student concerns about safety rather than a change to the curriculum.
The program stressed that volunteers need not be fluent in Spanish and can still be effective classroom supporters. Volunteers and prospective students can find information and sign-up details at ruta27.org.
The report was filed by Christine Sampson for LTV East End News. The program's summer recruitment and training schedule was announced on air; specific class locations were not specified.
