School board chair briefs supervisors on new schools, Scholar Studios and budget priorities

Berlin reported preliminary graduation totals for the Class of 2026 (over 1,000 graduates with approximately 70 percent earning an advanced diploma) and noted the first recognition of Scholar Studios coursework during commencement. Spielman detailed plans to open Mountain View Upper Elementary July 24 and ACE Academy Lamb’s Lane July 31, and said ACE Lamb’s Lane already exceeds initial enrollment expectations (nearly 300 students where 200 freshmen had been anticipated). The board and school staff discussed transportation, permitting timelines, and the need for county help with inspections and permitting to open on schedule.
ACPS also discussed the recently approved operating budget (~$303 million) that includes investments in math intervention, Scholar Studios, special education staffing and multi‑year compensation commitments aimed at improving retention. Berlin and Spielman proposed continued joint work with the Board of Supervisors on budget philosophy, multi‑year budgeting and joint retreats to improve coordination.
