Commission hears call for support for crisis centers; member outlines statewide survivor unemployment protections

A commissioner said PAR and Pennsylvania crisis centers will hold a rally in the state Capitol rotunda at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 8, to press for funding increases after several years without budget growth and to highlight risks local centers face if funding gaps continue. "This is now the 6th year in a row of no budget increasing for **** crisis centers," the commissioner said, and asked whether the commission could provide letters of support for those unable to attend.
Rachel Shepherd briefed the commission on a new statewide unemployment-compensation process for survivors of domestic violence that fast-tracks benefits confidentially. Shepherd said the process provides a fact-finding step (not a full hearing), allows claimants 120 days to supply documentation, and keeps employer notification limited—"it's very confidential," she said. The state will pay the benefits during the process, and employers will be notified only that the matter is resolved.
Commissioners volunteered to collect templates for letters of support and to consider whether commissioners individually or the mayor should sign them. No formal letters or endorsements were recorded as adopted during the meeting.
