Recreation staff told the commission that summer programming is gearing up: paid and free camps start mid-June, teen programs continue under grant support, and several community events are scheduled this summer.
Rajina, speaking for the recreation department, said June 15 is the start date for summer camps and that staff will conduct mandated trainings and orientations beforehand. The department is running both paid ("Elevate") and free ("Achieve") camps; several free sites already have waiting lists. Teen eco-action programs and Junior Giants youth baseball programming will continue with staff support and some grant funding and material support from external partners.
Rajina also announced a Shiles Reed Park grand opening on July 11 (11 a.m. to noon) and said Juneteenth programming will take place June 20 at Nickel Park; she said the department is preparing for the Richmond Plunge centennial on Aug. 15 and coordinating with multiple departments to stage the celebration.
Why it matters: The programs provide free and low-cost summer opportunities for families and youth in Richmond and highlight a large community celebration for the Plunge's 100th anniversary. Staff requested commissioner attendance at events and said event details and flyers will be circulated.
Closing: Staff said the master fee schedule remains in proposal stage and that staff will follow up on that and on parking/logistics for the planned parks tour on June 27.
