Goochland County unveils public dashboards to increase transparency

County staff demonstrated interactive Power BI dashboards covering administration, animal protection, building inspections, planning and other departments, saying dashboards will be updated three times a year and staff will solicit public feedback to expand them.
Goochland County presented its first set of public, interactive dashboards to the Board of Supervisors on June 2, aiming to make department performance and key metrics easier for residents to access.
Jessica Kronberg, the county’s Director of Strategic Communications, said the dashboards—built in Power BI—pull data from departments including administration, animal protection, building inspections, planning and zoning, general services, human resources, and parks and recreation. Kronberg demonstrated filters, date-range selectors and links to department surveys and explained the dashboards will be refreshed three times a year.
Kronberg said the project used existing software and no new funding; the county provided templates to departments and cleaned data for a May publication. She invited board members and the public to submit feedback through a user guide and a communications email and said future updates may add more data points and linked dashboards (for fire rescue, social services and children’s services).
Board members generally praised the initiative as a transparency tool. One supervisor asked whether headcount charts could be segmented by full- and part-time status; Kronberg said that segmentation is already available per department and can be added to other views on request.
Kronberg closed by demonstrating how to access the dashboards via the county’s Transparency tab and how users can interact with charts and pop-up details.
