ARB presses applicant to redesign proposed tall, low‑transparency gate in Sag Harbor area

A proposed 6‑foot cedar board gate at 321 Town Line Road in the Sag Harbor area drew sustained objections from the East Hampton Architecture Review Board on grounds of location, materiality and precedent.
Diego, the project’s general contractor, told the board the gate needs clearance to open without hitting the road grade and that the property is actively visited by people who sometimes drive into the wrong driveway. He asked for a gate set 35 feet from the property line to clear the road geometry.
Board members responded that the proposed design is too tall and too solid for that location: the gate would sit roughly 50 feet from pavement, be highly visible in an otherwise rural streetscape, and — if approved — could create a precedent for other tall gates on the road. Members urged the applicant to consider a 4‑foot gate (which would not require ARB review) or a taller but at least 50% transparent design if it must exceed 4 feet. The board did not record a vote approving the gate; the applicant said he would take the direction back to clients and consider alternatives.
