Hampton City Schools honors students, coaches and community partners at June board meeting

The June 3 Hampton City School Board meeting featured an extended recognition segment honoring students, coaches, educators and community partners.
Christopher Newport University was named to the Virginia School Boards Association business honor roll for its partnership work with the division. The board recognized Brandon Jones and a CNU representative who accepted the award on behalf of the university.
Athletic recognitions included Jones Magnet Middle School cheer champions, Jones girls basketball champions (28–12 final), Phoenix pre‑K–8 boys four‑time consecutive champions (48–24 final) and coach Jeremy Blunt, who was presented a plaque for 11 years of leadership at Phoebus High School. Coaches and students from several schools joined the board on stage for certificates, banners and commemorative coins.
Students also received awards: three students (from Hampton, Phoebus and Kecoughtan high schools) were honored as Top 20 Under 20 by the Hampton Roads Workforce Council; Serene Golden (Lindsay Middle School) won the Virginia Municipal League's statewide If I Were Mayor essay contest; Casia (Kaseya) Van der Linde (Kecoughtan) qualified for FBLA nationals after winning a state public speaking title; and Angela Chen (Hampton High School) was presented as a Gates Scholar, a highly selective scholarship program. "I'm really grateful and honored to receive the scholarship," Angela said, noting the award will help with expected UVA housing costs.
The board also recognized outstanding band and chorus directors and the division's visual and performing arts leadership for multiple state and regional honors, and presented a 30‑year service pin to Superintendent Dr. Haines.
The recognitions segment concluded after a recess, and the meeting proceeded to business items.
