Masconomet committee confirms Jim Meeley as assistant superintendent for finance and operations

The Masconomet Regional School Committee voted to confirm Jim Meeley as assistant superintendent for administration and finance, with his appointment set to begin July 1.

The Chair presented Meeley’s resume and the role the committee plays in confirming that the recommended candidate meets statutory qualifications, saying the committee is not the hiring authority but serves as a check under Massachusetts law. "If the appointment is not approved, there are a couple of different paths that can happen," the Chair said, adding that under Mass. General Law the committee cannot unreasonably withhold approval.

An interview committee member described Meeley as experienced with MSBA projects and large capital plans and said he was the unanimous choice of the interview group. During discussion, committee member Megan raised recent public attention to significant budget deficits in Nashua and North Andover and asked whether those issues had been reviewed as part of vetting. The interview committee member and the Chair said Meeley had addressed those matters directly during interviews and that no personal findings of fault had been reported in the materials presented to the committee.

Members asked whether references had been checked and about a recent short tenure in a listed position; the committee said references were requested with the application and that further follow-up could be sought by the hiring committee. Supporters highlighted Meeley’s experience with capital planning and relationships at the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) as assets for managing district projects.

A motion to approve the appointment was moved, seconded and approved on roll call. The Chair welcomed Meeley to the team.

The committee noted the district recommends appointments and that its role is limited to confirmation that statutory requirements are met; specifics of contract terms were not discussed in the meeting.
