Cromwell honors retiring superintendent Dr. Enza Macri and names teachers of the year

The Cromwell Board of Education opened its June 2 meeting with a public tribute to retiring Superintendent Dr. Enza Macri and several staff recognitions.
Mayor Mary Demetriadas presented a proclamation honoring Dr. Macri’s seven years as superintendent and decades-long education career, praising what she called a student-first philosophy that ‘‘made sure every student felt safe, loved, and valued every day.’’ Dr. Macri responded, ‘‘It has been an amazing career … I am forever grateful for this opportunity,’’ and thanked board members and staff for their support.
The board and district leaders also announced building and district teachers of the year: Heather Susi (Edna Stevens School), Deb Roccipiore (CMS), Dr. Eileen Kirschbaum (CHS) and Emma Baker (Woodside Intermediate School and district teacher of the year). Administrators highlighted classroom practices and leadership that led to the awards. In addition, central-office staff Michelle Demaro and Lori Rosano were recognized for managing a recent transition between medical-insurance carriers and for coordinating outreach to employees and union representatives.
Student representatives Jillian and Summer reported spring arts, STEAM and athletics highlights — including a state championship for the boys’ outdoor track team — and joined the board in thanking Dr. Macri and other retiring staff. Board members gave brief remarks of appreciation and said the district will celebrate further at upcoming events.
The board did not take any formal action on personnel related to the retirement at the June 2 meeting; Dr. Macri said her departure will be followed by planned hiring steps, including principal and finance-director interviews scheduled for early June.
The public portion of the meeting ended with a series of routine reports and the board moving on to other agenda items.
