The Zoning Board of Appeals on May 4 approved a request to permit a 12-by-14 deck at 10 Joseph Street that would reduce the interior side setback from 8 feet to 4 feet and the total side setback from 20 feet to 19.8 feet. Applicant Marion Roth said she and her husband, Joe Potruski, have lived on the property for 55 years and want a larger deck to entertain family and neighbors; adjacent homeowner Anne Haller spoke in support.
Board discussion focused on the numerical extent of relief and neighborhood comparables. Members noted the existing shed encroachment and discussed reducing the deck width by 1 foot to eliminate one of the variances; ultimately the board read a draft resolution that granted the variances "as per the submitted plans or lesser dimensions." The motion, moved and seconded from the dais, passed on roll call 5–1.
The board asked the applicant to provide any additional comparables showing other generators or similar encroachments in the neighborhood if available and confirmed the public hearing remains closed for this item now that the vote passed.
