NVCOG touts active-transportation microgrants; deadline announced

Ray, speaking for NVCOG's active-transportation work, briefed the committee on the state and regional active-transportation plans and reminded members about a microgrant program that funds small projects and equipment to encourage walking and biking.
"Applicants may apply for up to $5,000, not more than twice a year," Ray said, listing eligible uses such as bicycle helmets, maintenance training, rental of bicycle fleets, adaptive bicycles, and bike racks (purchase only). The program does not fund installation; it covers materials and non‑infrastructure items as described in the application materials.
NVCOG staff said the region has been successful with this program: 18 of 19 towns have previously received awards. Staff reported the program was funded at $500,000 in its first year and $750,000 this year and warned that current-cycle funds are likely to be exhausted by the closing date. Completed applications should be returned to Tayo (eolaleye@nbcogsct.gov); the next round closes June 12.
NVCOG also said it is finalizing a regional active-transportation plan draft and encouraged member towns to provide contacts and community groups for summer community engagement.
Next steps: NVCOG will circulate application forms to TTAC members; towns are advised to apply promptly if they intend to use this cycle's funds.
