Thomaston selectmen approve bench purchase, organizational realignment and several appointments

Marybeth Johnson, chair of the Beautification Committee, presented a quote from Barco for seven composite benches for Seth Thomas Park plus a memorial bench, saying the seven-bench quote totaled $7,385 with $608.16 in shipping for $7,993.16 and that the benches carry a 50-year warranty on the bench and 20 years on the hardware. The board voted to approve the purchase, authorizing not to exceed $8,000 from the NIPS fund.
"The quote is for 7 benches, and the quote is for $7,385, and shipping would be an additional $608.16 for a total of $7,993.16," Johnson said during her presentation. The motion to approve funding was seconded and carried unanimously.
The board also voted to forward a staff proposal to combine the highway superintendent and the WPCA superintendent into a single position and create a reporting coordinator role to town meeting for approval. The proposal had prior unanimous support from the WPCA commission; selectmen debated pay allocation, job posting and the workload of a combined position. The transcript records the roll-call portion of the vote as "Burr, no; Campbell, yes; Sileo, yes," and the motion carried.
Other approvals and motions on the agenda included:
- Approval of the Board of Selectmen minutes dated May 5, 2026 (motion carried unanimously).
- Acceptance of resignations and appointments: the board accepted resignations from Lehi Clark (Retirement Committee) and Adam Silver (Board of Finance); it appointed Jeff Madden to the Retirement Committee and reappointed Tanya Galpin to the Recreation Commission (motions carried).
- Acceptance of a reappointment for Deborah Bornable to the Greater Waterbury Transit District (motion carried).
- Approval of a fair-housing resolution presented for Fair Housing Month (motion carried).
The board also approved a package of tax refunds submitted by the tax collector. Many routine items were approved by voice vote; where the transcript records individual votes, those are noted above. The organizational realignment will appear on the town meeting call the board expects to issue ahead of a meeting scheduled within the coming weeks.
