Onslow Planning Board backs rezoning for Folkstone OFWB Church to allow gym and fellowship space

The Onslow County Planning Board on May 7 unanimously recommended approval of a rezoning request for Folkstone OFWB Church, allowing the property to move from R-8M to Highway Business (HB) to permit construction of an accessory gymnasium and future fellowship facilities.
Planner Jade Batchelor presented the application and confirmed the rezoning request originated with the applicant. Applicant Mitchell Parker told the Board he was advised the church was nonconforming when he submitted plans for a gym and was given the option to seek rezoning. "The church has existed for over 100 years," Parker said, and he described the immediate plan as an accessory building for church and school use, with a possible fellowship hall and renovated school building in the future. Parker stated the church did not expect an increase in student capacity at this time.
Board member William Sanders moved to recommend approval; Brandon Howard seconded and the motion passed by unanimous vote. The Board also approved the required consistency statement by unanimous vote. The Planning Board's recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Commissioners as part of the rezoning review process.
The Board continued with other agenda items following the vote.
