The council cleared special‑event permits, approving a Labor Day parade and beer‑tent plan scheduled for Sept. 7 (11 a.m.–8 p.m.) and a street‑closure request from the Escanaba Elks Lodge for an August 1 picnic. The council approved a pavement‑marking contract not to exceed $17,500 for high‑traffic corridors and renewed the city’s property and liability insurance with the Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority despite an 8.9% premium increase tied largely to public‑safety activities and additions to the fleet.
Councilors also approved purchasing 1007 and 1009 Ludington Street at $10,000 per parcel to assemble three contiguous downtown lots (the city already owns 1011 Ludington Street) for future development planning. The council approved a staff recommendation to hire Plea Logging & Tree Service for $2,600 to clear debris at a fire‑damaged lot at 208 S. 4th St., and approved other routine items.
All of the listed motions were adopted by council vote during the meeting.
