SARB reviews downtown murals and Memorial Day route; raises parking enforcement and dumpster misuse concerns

At the May 14 meeting the Shopping Area Redevelopment Board received several informational updates on downtown events and projects. Marketing Director deRoo said the city received 18 mural proposals for two mural spaces—on the southeast wall of 122 E Main (Adorned Home) and a removable mural in the passageway at 137 E Main—and that the city attorney is preparing agreements; because the projects were included in the 2025–2026 budget, work is expected to begin in June.
deRoo also reported updates to the Memorial Day parade route to accommodate construction on Central and Church and changes at the cemetery; this year’s Memorial Day ceremony will be held and livestreamed from 2nd Reformed Church. Event calendars were distributed to board members to display in their businesses.
In other business Board Member VanHoven raised ongoing parking concerns: the North parking lot is frequently full, with many vehicles appearing to belong to employees rather than customers, and vehicles parked along the curb in the South lot despite available spaces. VanHoven questioned enforcement priorities for posted parking policies. Board Member Gentry reported a resident had been observed depositing household garbage in dumpsters intended for businesses on that block.
The meeting adjourned at 10:02 A.M. by motion from Dick supported by VanHoven; all present voted aye.
