The Trussville City Schools Board of Education voted to proceed with design work for an outdoor classroom at Cahaba Elementary and to pursue an agreement with community partners to support the project.
Doctor Martin described the project as a long-discussed initiative supported by community partners — including Danny Garrett, Shay Shellnut, Dan Roberts, Mr. Kirkland and the Cahaba PTO — that has raised significant funds for the work. "I've asked Joy if she would do that," Martin said, referring to design leadership, and added the board could later consider a recommendation to name the classroom for Joy Tyner after design and bidding are complete.
Board members discussed locating the classroom behind existing fences; Martin said he had turned design responsibility to the district architect, Ryan Vernon, and to Joy Tyner. The board moved and approved the recommendation by voice vote. Staff will return to the board with design documents, proposed locations and bid-ready specifications before final approval or naming decisions are made.
The action authorizes design and partnership agreements; it does not approve construction contracting or the final naming recommendation, which the superintendent said would come back to the board for consideration.
