City hears status update on $900,000 CDBG-DR tree replanting project

A city contractor and the regional grant administrator updated the Marion City Council on the status of the Marion Tree Replanting Project, funded through Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) assistance.
Alyssa, grant administrator with the East Central Iowa Council of Governments, told the council the Iowa Economic Development Authority awarded a $900,000 CDBG-DR contract (contract no. 20DRI021) to Marion for tree replanting in parks and rights-of-way. She said funds were released on April 12, 2024, a pre-construction meeting occurred on March 12, 2026, and planting began May 6, 2026. "Watering continues weekly through July 24, 2026," she said. Alyssa reported $60,320.39 has been invoiced and reimbursed so far for project work, services and publications.
Alyssa also described recent budget changes: the city removed an originally committed $105,000 local match so the project could draw more from the awarded grant, and staff expanded the environmental review areas to increase planting locations and the total number of trees. She said required monitoring and site visits by the Iowa Economic Development Authority remain part of the project.
The project schedule, she said, remains on track for completion before the grant end date of Sept. 30, 2026. No public comments were made during the hearing on this item.
The council opened and closed the public hearing after the presentation; no further action was recorded beyond the hearing.
