Mercer Island parks commission elects Hay as chair, Markson as vice chair and approves minutes

The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Commission on June 4 elected Commissioner Hay as its new chair and Commissioner Sarah Markson as vice chair and approved minutes from a March 26 special meeting.
The nominations came under the item for commission officer elections. Commissioner Strack nominated Commissioner Hay for chair; with no other nominations the commission voted by voice and Hay was declared elected. Vice chair Markson was nominated and elected by voice/roll call vote.
Shortly after the leadership elections the commission moved to approve the minutes from the March 26, 2026, special hybrid meeting. City staff conducted a roll call and commissioners present voted in the affirmative; the motion passed.
The new leadership will preside over a summer schedule that includes a likely cancellation of the July 2 meeting, a parks capital update in September and a bylaws review item tentatively set for Oct. 1. Chair Hay closed the meeting at 6:20 p.m.
Note: the nominations and votes followed the commission’s established process for officer elections; staff said nominations do not require a second and a nominee receiving a simple majority is declared elected.
