Run for the Beaches and insurance trust present donations and grants for city projects and safety equipment

At the March 3 meeting the commission received two community and safety funding presentations: a $16,000 donation from Run for the Beaches and a $5,000 reimbursement check from the Preferred Governmental Insurance Trust (TIPS) to help purchase a gear-wash unit for the fire department.
Carol Bridal, race director of Run for the Beaches, recounted the event's growth from a few dozen participants to more than 500 registrants and said the proceeds support local environmental nonprofits and city projects. "Tonight, we're proud to present the city of Treasure Island with a donation of $16,000 from the proceeds of the 5th annual Run for the Beaches," Bridal said. She said roughly $10,000 is earmarked for an environmentally themed mural and water-refill-station upgrades at Gulf Front Park.
Jessica Zamora, the city's human-resources director, said the city's insurance trust participates in a TIPS program that reimburses safety equipment purchases: "If we spend up to $10,000, they'll reimburse up to $5,000." Fire Chief Tripp Barrs told commissioners the gear-wash unit cost approximately $46,500; the department recently received a State Fire Marshal grant of about $37,000 and the $5,000 TIPS reimbursement reduces the city's remaining cost to about $4,500.
The commission received both items and took ceremonial photos. Staff said proceeds and grants have already supported local nonprofits, water-refill infrastructure, and other environmental initiatives.
Next steps: the city will proceed with the gear-wash purchase and water station upgrades under the recorded grant and reimbursement commitments.
