Commission approves first reading of $536,000 budget amendment for causeway mechanical repairs

The Treasure Island City Commission on March 3 approved at first public hearing Ordinance 2026-07, a fiscal year 2026 general fund amendment recognizing $536,000 in additional expenses to complete mechanical repairs on the causeway.
Public works director Gary Volanek explained the bridge has 16 raising cylinders; staff recently accelerated replacement after detecting hydraulic-fluid leakage. Volanek said eight cylinders are replaced at a time and that continued maintenance is a public-safety priority. City staff told the commission the $536,000 will be drawn from a reserve that is funded by a 0.5 mill portion of city taxes set aside for causeway maintenance; staff estimated roughly $1.7 million will remain in the set-aside after the expenditure.
Commissioners approved the ordinance at first reading and scheduled the second public hearing and final reading for April 7. City staff said they will continue to explore options for long-term ownership and funding of the bridge to reduce reliance on city ad-valorem dollars.
Next steps: second reading scheduled for April 7; the commission will vote to adopt at that meeting if it chooses to proceed.
