At a facilities committee meeting, members tabled a decision on a proposed full remodel of the North Bus Garage after staff presented a worst‑case estimate of roughly $625,600 to bring the building up to code.
The Presenter said, “we're looking at $625,600” as a worst‑case scenario to completely remodel the existing building to meet code, including HVAC, electrical and data upgrades. Committee members recalled prior, much smaller proposals — including a $7,000 front‑half fix — and questioned how the project grew to a mid‑six‑figure estimate.
The committee’s debate centered on two choices: keep the status quo or move staff into renovated space in the back half of the garage. One committee member warned that a modest front‑half upgrade could trigger code compliance requirements that would substantially increase costs, saying the $10,000 fix “might be a $150,000” project if inspectors require additional work.
Presenter noted earlier estimates from Gordian applied to a much smaller building and that recent inspections and a full review by Josh and Travis identified many potential code triggers. Committee members expressed concern about budget availability and the uncertainty of township/code requirements.
After discussion about alternatives, site visits and the need for more precise code guidance, the Chair proposed taking the matter under advisement. The committee agreed to table the North Bus Garage remodel and revisit it at the August meeting, directing staff to gather additional options and coordinate a site walk and follow‑up conversations with building principals and code officials.
The committee’s next step is for staff to prepare refined options and cost estimates, including what minimal front‑half work might require from the township’s code official. No formal capital appropriation or contract was approved at the meeting.
