Council approves cemetery tree removals using trust fund

Town staff member (S5) told the council that Lakeview Cemetery had eight or nine dead, diseased or damaged trees and presented contractor photos and a quote. “We have a quote for $10,000, but if he does them all at once he’ll knock the $500 off,” S5 said, explaining the work is eligible for the cemetery trust fund established to pay upkeep and maintenance.
S5 said the town credits 50% of plot sales to that trust and that funds are available to pay for the work. Council members voted to accept the recommendation and authorized removal of the trees using the cemetery trust fund. Staff said they would schedule the contractor work to avoid irreversible damage to stones and to coordinate with code and shoreline restrictions where required.
The council asked staff to document the work and fund draw in the next audit and to provide photos and an invoice when complete.
