The Big Bear City Community Services District Board on Aug. 4 adopted a lactation accommodation policy put forward by Human Resources Manager and Board Secretary Morgan Szabad.
Szabad told the Board that California law requires employers to implement a lactation accommodation policy and to provide a private room other than a bathroom that is shielded from view, free from intrusion, safe, clean and free of toxic or hazardous materials; the room must contain a surface for a breast pump and other personal items, seating, and access to electricity or an alternative device to operate an electric or battery-powered pump. Szabad said the District does not currently have a dedicated lactation room but can accommodate the requirement using existing space that meets the statutory standards.
The Board approved the policy as presented by unanimous vote (motion by Director J. Rowe, seconded by Director Walsh). The minutes record no public comment and no amendments to the policy text. Human Resources was directed to identify and designate a space that satisfies the statutory elements and to report implementation steps to the Board.
