Volunteers and contractors restore Whetstone and Maple springs in West Woods

Patty, co-chair of the Woods Committee, presented the history and recent outcomes of two spring restoration projects in the West Woods. She said Whetstone Spring was cleared and bank-reinforced in 2023, with a new capstone and native plantings, and that a secondary spring discovered nearby was encapsulated in the work. For Maple Spring, Patty said the project required masonry repairs and stream-bank stabilization; the work began in late 2024 and finished in April 2025.
Patty credited RJ Landscaping (Jim Quinn and crew), longtime volunteers Steve and Dane, John Porter for a rendition of the planned restoration, and donors including the Womans Club of Washington Grove and the McCathern family for contributions toward dedication plaques. Patty invited residents to visit the restored sites, noting that Maple Spring sits off the lake parking lot and requires some trail repairs for safer access.
The Woods Committee marked Maple Springs completion with a dedication plaque and said ongoing maintenance will include clearing leaves and managing invasive species along the stream corridor. Patty acknowledged the late Joan (co-chair), who led early efforts but died before Maple Springs completion.
