Council agrees to reimburse 50% of greenfields permit fees for Sports Hub fields

The City of Homestead approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to reimburse 50% of eligible building permit fees for construction of sports fields and recreational improvements on the greensfields parcel associated with the Sports Hub development. Council members discussed whether the developer originally intended to pay fees in full and whether reimbursing fees constitutes an appropriate public contribution to a private developer, but several members argued the city will receive substantial public benefit from a large private investment in fields that will be available for public use.

Mayor and council emphasized the reimbursement applies only to the greenfields portion of the project and does not affect arena or academic village components. Staff noted the current permit fee obligations to date are modest (demolition permit ~$1,600) and that larger cost recovery items may arise later in the process. Several members said the developer is bringing significant private capital and public access commitments; the council approved the reimbursement motion by roll call.
