The City Commission unanimously approved a site-plan amendment on Wednesday allowing Somerset Charter School to enclose an existing canopy area referred to as Building B and to remove a Jersey barrier intended to improve drop-off and pick-up operations.
Caitlin Forbes of the city’s planning department described the amendment as a limited scope application: "They intend to use that for additional classroom space," Forbes said, adding that the change applies only to the current K–8 school footprint and does not alter the 1,280-student cap or the separate pending request to expand to grades 9–12.
The applicant’s requested work would add three walls to a canopy projection for roughly 4,500 square feet to create more interior classroom area and reconfigure the drop-off circulation by removing the Jersey barrier. Commissioners asked whether schematic diagrams were available; staff said only the previously shared photograph was in the record that day. Commissioner Kanterman moved to approve the site-plan amendment and Commissioner Murphy Salimoni seconded. The roll-call vote was unanimous and the commission approved the action (Resolution 2026-040).
Staff noted the separate item about adding high-school grades and exceeding the student-cap remains scheduled for a future meeting and was not part of this approval.
