Council directs staff to prepare resolution on Tronics cleanup amendment

The Warrenville City Council on June 1 voted to direct staff and the city attorney to prepare a resolution indicating the city’s acceptance in principle of a proposed third amendment to the Tronics (Kerr‑McGee/Tronics) settlement that governs remaining cleanup funds for radioactive thorium contamination.
City Administrator Christina White gave a recap of the legal and cleanup history, saying the Department of Justice is proposing an amendment to clarify how leftover trust funds should be handled now that remediation and monitoring work in the region is largely complete. "The principal purpose of that amendment is to update and clarify how any funds managed now, that most of the remediation and monitoring work has been completed in this region, what will happen with any remaining funds that are left over," White said.
White said DuPage County has led cleanup, and that the IEPA, Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the attorney general’s office, DuPage County and the Forest Preserve District have reviewed the proposed amendment and indicated support. Alderman Kreukenberg moved to direct staff to prepare a resolution approving the 3rd amendment pending final attorney review; the motion passed on voice vote.
The council’s action today was a direction to prepare materials for formal approval; staff emphasized that they have not yet signed a final agreement and will return with the finalized amendment and an ordinance/resolution for council adoption after attorney review.
