Police chief outlines festival coverage plans, background check and policy updates

Police Chief David Pernice reported to Union City Borough Council on department activity, festival staffing and policy work at the June 25 meeting.
Chief Pernice reviewed the May 2024 police report and said he had consulted neighboring agencies about fundraising totals for local golf scrambles; he reported Corry raised roughly $16,000 and Warren raised about $18,000–$20,000. For the upcoming French Creek Festival, he said Erie County detectives agreed to fund overtime and provide two to three officers from the Erie County Courthouse to supplement local coverage. He also said he has asked Corry PSP for additional coverage but had not yet received a response.
Pernice said he is completing a Civil Service background check and expects completion by July 5, 2024. He reported working with Lexipol to update department policies and removing policies he deems unnecessary; he noted the solicitor is reviewing policy changes and council will await the solicitor’s approval before final adoption.
Mayor Robert Wolf earlier thanked Chief Pernice and Officer Shelly for traffic enforcement work and positive community feedback. The council recorded no questions or further concerns about the police report in the meeting minutes.
