At the end of the meeting the commission held a study session for LR Johnson Construction’s proposed Yucaipa yard (construction equipment storage and office). The applicant presented conceptual drawings for a phased approach that would replace on-site shipping containers and temporary offices with a barndominium-style office and enclosed storage buildings, plus landscaping and perimeter screening.
The applicant’s presenter (the firm’s representative) said the intent is to improve aesthetics and contain equipment behind new buildings and landscaping. Commissioners recommended stronger screening adjacent to neighboring properties, suggested a block wall along 17th Street with a solid gate for controlled access, and urged the applicant to review successful nearby yards for options on surfacing and maintenance. One commissioner commended the applicant’s illustrative drawings and suggested hiring an engineer for formal plans.
Planning staff said a temporary use permit application is currently in review to allow interim operations while the long-term entitlement is revised and that the applicant may carry the active entitlement case forward. No formal action was required at the study session; staff will return the revised designs and permit review outcomes when those materials are ready.
