Staff said they received three competitive bids and recommended T Schaeffer Contractors based on the engineer’s recommendation; the work will be financed with liquid fuels funds.
Commissioners asked whether narrowed lanes would accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists; staff said no separate pedestrian or bike facility is included in this contract and described plans for a future trail network associated with the Melrose development that will provide pedestrian connections. Commissioners and staff emphasized the upper section must be done ahead of Melrose-area construction to avoid the road deteriorating further from heavy truck traffic.
A motion to recommend awarding the contract was made and carried by voice vote. The committee recorded the award amount as $313,947.95. The agency official said other paving work in the township is planned for 2027 and beyond; this is the only full reconstruction scheduled for 2026.
Next steps: The recommendation goes to the full board for formal award and contract execution; staff will coordinate scheduling to limit disruptions and to interface with the Melrose developer’s planned work.
