Council hears plan to fund Summerfest and a proposal to create a small community-events grant program

The administration asked council for roughly $30,000 to help underwrite Summerfest, a three-day music-focused event planned for the third weekend of July, and councilmembers discussed a standing community-events fund and an application process to distribute smaller grants to local groups.

"Right now, we're looking at about $30,000 that's needed," the administration’s presenter, Mr. Carrington, said, describing vendor, stage and logistics costs. He recommended that the expense be charged to parks and recreation because the event is programming that aligns with that department.

One councilmember proposed setting aside a recurring community-events allocation ("like, 10 to 15 max") and creating a simple application to spread small grants and in-kind support more transparently across nonprofits and resident groups. Council discussed using general fund or parks-and-rec resources and noted the value of requiring basic reporting from recipients to ensure accountability.

Administration said Summerfest security would use Inkster police and reserve officers, and council discussed whether outside law-enforcement support would be needed. No formal vote was taken on the funding request at the June 3 session; the administration will return with budget language and options for where the funding could be placed.
