Town to send letter of support for Harriet Tubman Byway; board stops short of a town resolution

At the work session, board members discussed a request related to the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway and agreed to provide a letter of support rather than a town resolution, in part because the byway and most related events fall within village jurisdictions.

One trustee who reviewed the byway map said the corridor “does not go through any part of unincorporated Greenburgh” and that events and signage would be centered in the villages. Several board members said that, because the byway’s route and activities are village-focused, the town could not commit to intermunicipal events or signage without separate agreements with each village.

Staff and a trustee said organizers had requested a letter of support and that the County of Westchester would be the body to pass a formal resolution for the corridor; given time constraints and the villages’ involvement, the board concluded a letter would be an acceptable and practical form of support. Members asked staff to circulate the draft letter and to follow up with village trustees who have already taken steps on the corridor.
