MLK Park paving delayed; contractor to install splash pad plumbing lines under grant approval

The Malden Park Board heard updates July 15 that maintenance and construction timelines for two park projects have slipped and that staff may contract out specific splash pad work.
City Administrator Ivone Smith told the board that recent heavy rainfall has postponed paving of the MLK Park basketball court until August. She said the board should expect a clearer schedule in the next couple of weeks.
On the splash pad, Smith said the city and Parks staff contacted the grant administrator to ask whether the installation could be contracted. The administrator approved that approach, and the company that sold the splash pad equipment has agreed to lay the plumbing lines. Smith said the vendor will use two city workers and city equipment during the installation and that the additional cost is expected to be limited to the vendor's labor for one person. Smith noted that projects under $20,000 need not be bid, and she expects the cost to be well below that threshold.
There was no vote on either project; board members asked for further updates at a future meeting once timing and final costs are known.
