Board approves CKLA K–5 pilot, plans data-driven evaluation for English learners

The Schuyler Community Schools board approved a purchase to pilot the CKLA (Amplify) English‑language arts program for kindergarten through fifth grade, with the pilot scheduled to begin in the second and third quarters of the school year.
Administrators recommended a pilot after committee review and consultation with similar districts (Columbus, Grand Island and Lexington). Speaker 6 said CKLA’s third edition includes expanded multilingual supports and the Language Studio intervention that keeps English learners in the core reading block while providing targeted EL instruction. District staff plan on‑site training before the pilot and ESU coaching (cited as Brooke Collier at ESU) during professional‑development days.
The district will evaluate classroom and student outcomes by comparing pilot classrooms with classrooms continuing to use the Wonders program using MAP and early-literacy assessments midyear and in spring. Speaker 6 said the team would build curriculum maps during summer implementation to remove specific lessons or passages that staff deem misaligned with district expectations. The presenter also noted that Amplify revised its third edition to remove some passages on early world civilizations dealing with religion after receiving feedback from districts and practitioners.
A motion to purchase CKLA pilot materials was moved, seconded and approved by roll call. Board members said they value the pilot structure and committed supports and monitoring; several trustees requested continued oversight and the option to revisit the decision if outcome measures or teacher feedback indicated problems.
