Stanley adds 'Auction House' as permitted use in central business district

The Stanley Town Council on May 5 approved a zoning text amendment (ZTA26-01) to add "Auction House" as a permitted use in the Central Business (C-B) zoning district.
Planning Director Sarah Penley told the council the amendment was initiated by the Planning Board to update long-standing ordinance language assembled by an outside firm and to improve the towns competitiveness for economic development. Penley said existing ordinance regulations remain in placefor example, structures larger than 25,000 square feet would still require a special-use permit, and the sale of animals would remain restricted to the M-1 district, which requires a special-use permit.
Resident Carrie Lane recommended the council add an explicit definition for "Auction House" in the ordinancePenley replied the definition already exists in the towns ordinance and that staff efforts to ensure the online ordinance reflects current text are ongoing. The council voted unanimously to approve the text amendment and accepted the Planning Boards consistency statement.
Council and staff said the change aims to modernize an older ordinance and broaden locally permissible commercial uses while retaining the towns existing safeguards for large facilities and animal sales.
