Council approves rezoning of 712 N. Main St. to General Business

The Stanley Town Council unanimously approved a zoning map change May 5 to reclassify Parcel 133330 at 712 N. Main St. from the Central Business (C-B) district to General Business (G-B).
Planning Director Sarah Penley told the council the parcel, owned by Local Union No. 5285, adjoins another parcel already zoned G-B. Penley said rezoning the site would create unified zoning across the combined property and likely correct an apparent mapping error that placed the parcel outside the towns real central business district.
The Planning Board reviewed the request on March 16, 2026, recommended approval based on consistency with Stanleys comprehensive land use plan, and staff supported the rezoning. After a brief discussion the council voted to adopt the rezoning and a secondary motion to accept the Planning Boards consistency statement; both passed unanimously (5-0). No residents spoke during the hearing.
Adopting the rezoning allows broader development options consistent with nearby commercial and residential uses, Penley said, and the council directed staff to treat the Planning Board consistency statement as standard practice going forward.
