Butler County approves utility permit, sets bid dates and authorizes staff travel

Butler County supervisors approved several routine administrative items May 18, including a utility permit, bid‑opening dates and travel authorization for the county weed superintendent.
The board approved a Windstream permit to plow a communications cable along Road 31 from Road T east to the railroad tracks. The board also set June 15, 2026 at 10:15 a.m. as the time to open sealed culvert bids and sealed gravel bids for FY2026–2027; a dust-control bid opening was also scheduled by motion.
Weed Superintendent Max Birkel said he received a $1,000 scholarship to attend the 2026 NAISMA Conference in Virginia and asked for approval to attend at an estimated $1,500–$2,000 net cost; the board approved the travel request. Birkel also provided a program update noting extensive leafy spurge on the eastern county line, success with drone work on phragmites in 2025 and interest in Pictometry/EagleView imagery to support weekly mapping.
The approvals passed by roll-call vote with all present voting Aye.
