Jackson officials sworn in for 2026; council appoints Don Cook mayor pro tem and OKs 2026 meeting calendar

Mayor Carlos Duffey and newly elected councilmembers took the oath of office during a Jan. 6 City of Jackson regular meeting at the Butts County Administration Building.
Judge William Fears administered the swearing-in for Carlos Duffey as mayor and for councilmembers elected to four-year terms, including Lewis Sims and Ricky “P-Nut” Johnson. The meeting, called to order at 7:39 p.m., opened with an invocation by Pastor Llewellyn Miller and the Pledge of Allegiance.
The council handled routine business quickly. Councilman Don Cook moved to approve the meeting agenda; Councilman Theodore Patterson seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The consent agenda — approval of the Dec. 16, 2025 executive session, work session and regular meeting minutes — was approved on a motion by Councilman Lewis Sims and a second from Councilman Theodore Patterson.
Councilwoman Jeanette Riley moved to appoint Councilman Don Cook as mayor pro tem for 2026 and authorized Mayor Duffey to execute any related documents; the motion, recorded as seconded by Councilman Ricky "P-Nut" Johnson, passed unanimously. The council also unanimously approved the 2026 City Council meeting dates on a motion by Councilman Theodore Patterson with a second from Councilman Lewis Sims.
There were no public comments during the allotted public comment period. In brief closing remarks, councilmembers and the mayor expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and outlined their intent to work collaboratively in 2026. Councilwoman Jeanette Riley moved to adjourn; Councilman Theodore Patterson seconded and the meeting ended at 7:48 p.m.
