Chelsea council accepts preliminary community center task force report and directs staff to investigate options

The Chelsea City Council voted Oct. 17 to accept the preliminary Community Center Task Force report and directed city staff to further investigate the options outlined in the document.
The motion to accept the report was made by Council Member Peter Feeney and seconded by Council Member Eric Keaton; the vote was recorded as “All Ayes.” The task force was created Feb. 3, 2020, to research community center options and present recommendations to the council. The report accepted by council is dated Oct. 4, 2022.
Council also separately directed staff to draft proposal language for reinstating three advisory bodies—Housing, Sustainability, and Arts, Culture & Heritage—with updated roles, responsibilities, and proposed membership structures. Council Member Eric Keaton moved the direction to staff; the motion passed unanimously.
City Manager Roy Atkinson said staff will return proposed commission language to council for review at a future meeting. The council did not adopt any final policy or spending commitment Oct. 17; the votes authorized further staff work and investigation.
Next steps: staff will prepare draft commission language and further study options from the task force report for council consideration at a subsequent meeting.
