Historic District Commission discusses 250th celebration plans, Indian Rock Park update and routine business

Peter Griffin, chair of the Historic District Commission, opened the meeting on June 4 in the Community Development Department conference room and reviewed a series of event and site updates.
The commission discussed logistics for the town’s 250th celebration, including a need for one cord of firewood and ten bales of straw for historical reenactors; members noted the straw may need to be purchased and that no volunteer had yet stepped forward to coordinate event parking. Griffin led the conversation about event planning and follow-up assignments.
Griffin also reported on Indian Rock Park, saying that WCTV declined to fund installation of wired cable infrastructure and that the project will move forward with private funding. Secretary Derek Saffie said he will distribute draft QR-code content for the park for the commission’s review once he receives additional material from the Garden Club about park flora and from Eagle Scout Christopher Redard about his site project.
Members reviewed the Strawberry Festival and agreed it was well attended; organizers distributed flags and patriotic temporary tattoos, and reenactors including Bob Mackey promoted an upcoming historic reenactment while in period costume. Cheryl Haas arranged for U.S. flags to be installed along Church Road and in front of the Senior Center.
The commission briefly discussed the municipal building evaluation report and took no further action at this time. The Board of Selectmen has approved disposal of the piano on the upper floor of Town Hall, a separate action reported to the commission.
Votes at a glance: Doreen Demone moved and Derek Saffie seconded approval of the May 7, 2026 minutes; the motion passed 4–0. Brad Dinsmore moved and Doreen Demone seconded approval of the May 21, 2026 minutes; the motion passed 4–0. Derek Saffie moved to adjourn at 7:16 PM, seconded by Doreen Demone; motion passed 4–0.
Kenneth Finney of 6 Hayes Hart Road asked the commission about a stone wall boundary marker that has been buried over time; the commission advised him to consult Community Development for next steps. The commission also reached consensus to cancel its July 2, 2026 meeting. The meeting record was filed by Secretary Derek Saffie.
