Jonesboro resident urges board to press county commissioners earlier on school funding

During public comment at the June 4 meeting, Mary Grace Wooten of Jonesboro told the Washington County Board of Education she wanted the board to adopt a more proactive strategy when seeking county funding.
"My name is Mary Grace Wooten. 219 Emma Grace Drive, Jonesboro," she said, and asked why the board "wait until the last minute to take action?" Wooten urged board members to stand up at county budget hearings and explain to commissioners and the public which teacher positions and programs the district would have to give up if funding increases were not approved. She cited a recent public commenter at a county meeting who effectively detailed program risks and urged similar advocacy from the board.
Board members thanked her for her remarks. The public comment came ahead of agenda votes on budget amendments and purchase orders that will affect district spending.
