Bend‑LaPine board directs district to revise student incident reports after family raises concerns

The Bend‑LaPine Administrative SD 1 Board of Directors voted June 2 to direct district staff to revise the findings and incident reports for a recent student incident so the written record reflects what was seen in video evidence and the concerns outlined by the family.

Board Chair called the special meeting following an executive session under ORS 192.660(2)(b) and (2)(f). Director Jen Lynch moved that “the district amend the investigative reports to be reflective of what was seen in the videos.” Director Cameron Fisher seconded the motion; the board approved it by voice vote and the chair declared "ayes have it." The board instructed staff to redact student data as required.

Why it matters: The family, represented in the meeting by Heidi Jarvis, told the board the district record inaccurately portrayed the student as the sole aggressor and that school administration and the school resource officer provided "a false narrative," according to a Feb. 20 letter from Eric Powell that the board cited in directing next steps. Other board members suggested enumerating the family's specific concerns from the Feb. 20 letter — discrepancies between the incident description, the chronology and the video, questions about the SRO’s description of events, and concerns about alleged excessive force — and directing administration to address them in the revisions.

The board also discussed a review of campus supervision, including the SROs and campus monitors, as part of the response. The motion as finalized directed the district and staff to revise findings resulting from the incident in accordance with the parent concerns and requests outlined in the Feb. 20 letter, with necessary redactions for student privacy.
