Local volunteers launch Mount Sterling–Montgomery County community fund under Bluegrass Community Foundation

Volunteers formally announced the public launch of a Mount Sterling–Montgomery County community fund at the Montgomery County Fiscal Court meeting on Sept. 15, 2025.

"We publicly launched what's called the Mount Stro McGomery County Community," said Mr. Hard Walker, a local resident who introduced the initiative. Organizers told the court they plan to place the fund under the Bluegrass Community Foundation umbrella, which will administer investments and make grants from the fund; the group proposed distributing roughly 5% of annual interest earnings as grant awards once a target balance is reached.

Hard Walker described community fundraising and donations as the primary source of initial capital and gave an example of a similar program in Clark County that used proceeds from the sale of county property to seed a community endowment that later supported dental outreach and volunteer clinics.

Those launching the fund told the court they may return to request assistance from the county, including possible transfers of surplus property or other noncash support, but said no formal request was before the court on Sept. 15.

Organizers provided handouts and invited the court to follow coverage in the local paper for further detail. The announcement is an initial step; organizers said board decisions on a target funding level and grant procedures remain forthcoming.
